Icom IC-2820 HAM Radio Installed

I chose to install a new Icom IC-2820 in the new build. This radio is a dual band VHF/UHF radio with D-Star support. What is really cool about this radio is the Head Unit mounts separate from the Mic.

Radio

The Radio is mounted next to the Inverter in the right rear of the FJ. It will be covered by the trim panel and provide a clean finish.

Radio head unit

The Head unit is mounted on an adjustable base the is stuck to the dash. The wire comes out the dash at a seam.

GPS Antenna

The radio includes a GPS and the antenna is not waterproof. The GPS is mounted to the dash right in front of the center gauge console.

The mic connector is mounted by the drivers right knee with the mic hanging from the center dash.

Mic Connector

When I have the roof rack installed I will be mounting 2 dual band antennas for the radio to support the diversity function that uses the antenna with the best signal.

Cost:

  • IC-2820: 584.95
  • D-Star/GPS Module: 259.95
  • Antenna Mounts: $50.00 each
  • Mic Extension: $40.00

Time:  4.5 hours (lots of time has been saved by having all the interior trim panels pulled.)

tomas

Tomas has lived in Colorado since age 5. Having grown up on the Western Slope of Colorado lots of time was spent in the Desert Southwest. Tomas' father introduced him to the love of 4 wheeling at an early age in the high mountains around Aspen, Colorado. While an avid Mountain Biker, Tomas and his Family enjoy adventures in the mountains and desert in the remote locations that can only be reached by 4wd. Day hikes are always a must when on the family trips. While enjoying outdoor activities he wants to share his love as a certified 4wd trainer and ski instructor. Tomas also enjoys caving and cave exploration. Tomas currently resides in Colorado Springs.
