2013 Spring Vacation – The drive out

As planning for our spring vacation started taking shape it looked like we would be revisiting areas we had traveled before. The plan was to head to the South Central part of Utah.

Trip Preparations

I used a number of resources for planning this trip. These included, National Geographic maps, Google Earth, Backcountry Adventures Utah, as well as a number of other resources. With weather conditions and temperatures up in the air we decided not to for go specific route plans and instead head for the south central Utah region with plans to move as weather dictated.

Day one took us south from Colorado Springs in some of the worst winter driving I have experienced in years. Cars were off the road all over the place with ambulances and fires trucks attending to many of them.  It was the type of driving were one does not want to even go close to the brakes. At the top of La Veta pass we finally left the snow and ice behind.

After a long day of driving we finally arrived at our camp for the first night. Sand Island near Bluff Utah is one of the main put ins for the San Juan river. The camp ground has a number of pleasant sites within walking distance of the rock art panel.

tomas

Tomas has lived in Colorado since age 5. Having grown up on the Western Slope of Colorado lots of time was spent in the Desert Southwest. Tomas' father introduced him to the love of 4 wheeling at an early age in the high mountains around Aspen, Colorado. While an avid Mountain Biker, Tomas and his Family enjoy adventures in the mountains and desert in the remote locations that can only be reached by 4wd. Day hikes are always a must when on the family trips. While enjoying outdoor activities he wants to share his love as a certified 4wd trainer and ski instructor. Tomas also enjoys caving and cave exploration. Tomas currently resides in Colorado Springs.
