In the spring of 2008 we took a trip to the South Eastern part of Utah with our objective being to visit native American rock art and ruin sites. Through my research on the Internet I discover a ruin called Moon House Ruin. The location of this ruin is not made public due to its sensitive nature so it took some investigation to discover the location. Through some exhaustive research I was able to determine where I though the ruin was. The use of Google Earth confirmed that there was a parking area and trail into the canyon that I suspected held the ruin.
To Explore this site on Cedar Mesa we camped at Natural Bridges National Monument. We departed Natural Bridges at about 8:00 A.M. and took the Hwy 261south towards Mexican Hat. A few miles south on this highway we turned east an established dirt road and started looking for the location of Moon House Ruin. With respect to the BLM’s wishes to not publicise the location of the ruin I will not state the location.
I found this ruin to be one of the best preserved that I have ever seen. The wall seem close to 100% intact with plaster and paintings still preserved.
The Following are pictures from our visit to Moon House and the canyon that it is located in.

Outstanding ruin! Looks like a wonderful place to visit!

I love this post. I am starting my own ‘Yota project Cruiser. Found a good deal on a new ’08 FJ, and am launching new adventures.
Later this year I am planning on a trip to the Salt Lake area to find the crash site of a cousin of mine, who went down in his airplane some years ago on an island in the Great Salt Lake. I would love to incorporate finding the Moon House Ruins as well. Without revealing the exact location (BLM desires respected) could you give me a starting point, perhaps the GPS of the parking spot, and a clue or two? I’ll do the research and exploration from there – virtual and otherwise.
Thanks in advance and we’ll see you on the trail!
Dave
Its looks so wonderful. A very full of legends I will experience if I can go there. Horray!
My sis and I have visited many of the southwest’s ruins and would love to go to Moon House. Alas, I fear that the trek in there is beyond us now so your wonderful photos give us a great view of what we are missing! Thank you!
