For some time I have been running 2 inexpensive HID driving lights from Checker on the front of my Toyota FJ Cruiser. The pattern from these lights was not very well directed down the road even though they did seem to fill the area right in front of the FJ with light. I also had one of these lights fail after 1.5 years and they are not repairable. As a more refined solution I decided to install Baja Designs Fuego 4 inch lights on the FJ. To get the best lighting I chose to go with 4 lights; two driving beam for projection down the road, and two wide cornering lights to fill the area in front and to the sides of the FJ. The wide cornering lights have a 40 degree beam and the driving lights have a 20 degree beam. The Fuego lights have a cool quick adjustment for vertical aiming. Installing these on my All Pro Off Road light bar took an additional bar to provide 4 mounting points. The cornering beams are pointed about 10 degrees out for better side lighting. The 2 driving lights are mounted outside the cornering lights and a little lower. I [...]

I have been a hat wearer for sometime with Baseball caps being the norm. About two years ago I decided I better start shading my face and neck better and I chose a Tilley Hat. Tilley hats are hand crafted in Canada with quality materials. The first hat I purchased from Tilley was the TH4 Hemp Hat. The TH4 has a large sunshade brim that is 3 ½” front and back and 2 ½” on the sides. I have worn this hat on a number of our summer and fall adventure trips and enjoyed the comfort and shade that it has provided. I have washed this hat in our front load washer and the hat always emerges ready to be worn. A few months ago Tilley sent me my second hat to try out. The TWF1 Montana Hat is a felt wool hat that includes fold down ear flaps. This hat is a good complement to my TH4 for use during colder days. The hat is crushable and packable which I have found to be a good asset. When not in use I can stuff the hat in my bag or some other out of the way location and not [...]

The Golight Stryker is a remote operated spotlight that utilizes halogen technology. I currently have two of the lights install on my Toyota FJ Cruiser. I recently sent one of the lights to MagnaLight for an HID upgrade. The upgrade includes an integrated HID bulb and ballast as well as an external antenna for the remote control. The external antenna has increased the range and reliability of the remote control. The HID upgrade increases the intensity and focus of the light. During my trip to Mexico last week I was able to compare the standard halogen and HID lights. The HID cast a very focused high intensity beam. The color of the light is much whiter than the Halogen lamp. Being able to move further from the FJ with the remote able to still control the lamp will be an asset in many situations. The 35 watt HID lamp draws 1/2 the amps of the normal halogen bulb which increases the efficiency of the lamp and with out the engine running will slow the battery drain. The photos bellow show the higher intensity of the HID lamp. The photos were both taken with a 50 mm Lens at 4 second [...]

It took me some time to figure out where to carry my Scepter Fuel cans on my M416 trailer. We initially carried two fuel cans on top of the FJ. We then went on a trip where we needed to use the 2 cans and did not have a reserve. I always like to carry one backup can that I hope we do not need. Moving 2 cans to the trailer and keeping one on the FJ rack seems to be the right choice for us. If we setup the trailer as a base camp will will still have one can when we are off in the FJ. The scepter cans can be carried on their side which increases the options for carrying. A while ago I decided that the best place for the cans would be on their side in front of the fenders. I have been planning on this modification for some time and finally got around to it, went and got the steal, and using my somewhat rudimentary welding skills I fabricated two racks for the cans. The racks have lots of slop in them, however this is needed to the cans can still be removed when they [...]

Having a grill along on camping trips greatly expands the capabilities of the camp kitchen. I started out with a Colman grill but found that the grill did not cook hot enough and the construction was not up to the challenge of extended off-road travel. Looking further I found a company that makes a portable grill that is 100% stainless steel and designed to hold up to the rigors of marine use. The grill also uses infrared grilling technology. The Solaire Anywhere Portable grill is not cheap with a retail price of $400.00 but you do get what you pay for. The infrared burner heats in less than 5 minutes and heats to over 1000 degrees. I have used the grill for a number of trips at altitudes up to 11,000 feet and the performance has been fantastic. The grilling surface is small but works well for the 3 in our group. The grill has adjustable feet to level it on a uneven surface. Also included is an electronic ignition that is powered by 1 AAA battery. After a few months use the ignitor stopped and I am guessing it needs to be replaced. The grill can be fueled by [...]

How do you make a good product even better? By listening to your customers. This is what All Pro Off Road did with their front bumper for the Toyota FJ Cruiser. I have been running the original All Pro Front Bumper on my FJ Cruiser for the last 3 years and I have been very happy with it. There were some problems but I was able to modify the bumper to fix them. At the FJ Summit this last summer I had a chance to discuss the front bumper issues with All Pro and I was please to find out that a next generation front bumper was on its way. I received one of these bumper from All Pro Off Road for an evaluation last month and I am very happy with what I see. All Pro Off Road has stayed with the minimalist design yet they have enhanced the bumper to address the concerns customers had with the original. Just looking at the bumper I could tell this was an evolution of something good to something even better. The powder coat looks flawless and the welds are all clean. To understand this evolution I need to discuss the problem with [...]

With the goal of replacing my primary battery in the Toyota FJ cruiser with the best possible replacement I spent quite some time researching what battery would work best. My goals were to find a battery that would fit in the current location of the primary battery, provide good starting characteristics, supply plenty of current to the winch, and be able to be abused with deep cycles. The factory battery has the following characteristics: Type: 27F Cold Cranking Amps: 710 Voltage: 12 Weight: Approximately 50.4 lb(The stock battery is 46 lb) Width: 6.81 Length: 12.06 Height: 8.87 Reserve Capacity 155 Minutes The location of the main battery can accommodate a battery that is up to 13.5 to 14 inches long but the width and height need to stay about the same. Through research online and other reviews I found that Odyssey batteries have the best all round characteristics. The batteries provide great starting power, good winching capability, can be treated as a deep cycle battery, and pack the most power into the space used. For the FJ Cruiser the Odyssey PC2150 provides an almost perfect fit. The battery is available with 3 different terminal configurations and I selected the PC2150ST-M [...]

The Annex for the ARB Simpson III Rooftop tent is a fantastic addition. It provides an area under the tent platform that is protected from both the bugs and the elements. I’ll let the photos do most of the talking for this review. The annex is mounted to the tent platform by sliding the edges into a channel in the platform edge for the back and both sides. The section under the awning by the ladder zips in with a large durable zipper. The Simpson III Annex does not have a floor which I like. This is an area that will have lots of traffic and the floor would be hard to keep clean. The blue flaps can be folded in or out at the base. Camping in one location with high wind I have the flaps folded out and staked down which helps keep wind out of the annex. We use our rear FJ rubber mat as a floor mat under the ladder. The annex mounting system provides a system that is very durable and allows the sides to be drawn tight by the stakes. If the tent is mounted so it folds off the back of an SUV [...]

Light is key to having a workable camp. I gave up on gas lanterns last year after finding that the mantles where breaking almost every time I moved camp. Gas lanterns are very bright and can light an entire work area. Initially I thought I would try to replicate this with LED lanterns. I purchased 4 Brunton Gorb XB 3 Watt LED lanterns. My theory was I would place a few of the lanterns around camp to yield enough light to work by. Well, this failed. The Gorb lanterns cast enough light to see and perform some tasks but I find that I cannot cook with the light or read by it. I will still be using the Gorb lanterns but will supplement them with a good head lamp.
