With our extended trip to Alaska this last Summer I was able to get a good feel for MAX Hitch. “I discuss the installation of the hitch in this post.” The hitch functioned flawlessly for the 9300 miles driven on our Alaska adventure. Having the expendable tongue on the trailer saved money on the ferry portion of the trip by allowing our total length to be reduced by 1 foot. With the extension in place the trailer tracked much better behind the FJ. My main concern was in hooking up the trailer. The backup camera installed on the FJ made this a breeze. I was able to watch the alignment in the backup screen and get it almost perfect every time. Based on my experience on this trip I definitely give the MAX hitch a thumbs up.

I have been spending lots of time planning what trip we will be doing this spring and summer. Here is a short list of where you will be able to find My FJ Cruiser this springs and summer: March – Spring Vacation will take us to south east Utah where we will be exploring Comb Rodge and Cedar Mesa. April will find me in southern Arizona at the Overland Expo May will bring a trip to Moab Utah for Cruz Moab In June I will be taking Wilderness First Responder training. The big plans for the summer are a six week trip to Alaska. I will be leaving towards the end of July for this trip. I also will be participating in some local Amateur Radio Emergency Service events. This makes for a busy spring for us so look forward to lots of posts from the road.

I finally received our new rooftop tent. The ARB tent was not large enough for 3 people so we are upgrading to a Ezi Awn T-Top 1800 RoofTop Tent. The 1800 is going to give us and additional 17 inches in width which will allow the 3 of us to have enough room to sleep. The tent was delivered on a large pallet with 2 additional boxes containing the ladder and the room. To be able to mount the tent I needed to add additional cross bars to the rack. Using the skid loader with the forks attached made it very easy to set the tent on the rack. The tent weighs about 200 lbs and would have been difficult to set by hand. Once bolted in place the tent is very securely mounted. I will be doing a full write up on the tent once I have had a chance to use it in the next few weeks. I also will be adding lift struts to the rack to make lifting the tent easier to lift. The tent is very high quality and utilises very durable canvas and hardware.

Right now I am working on my second favorite task, planning a trip. LJ and I will be spend 5 days during Thanksgiving break in Moab. We are planning on White Rim counter clockwise. If WR is closed due to weather I am planning to either head out to Lockhart Basin or spend time up behind Arches. All of these locals offer the majestic beauty of the canyon county and both LJ and I are planning on getting a good nature fix. Look for a few more post as I prep for this trip. See you on the trail!

Saturday brought the last full day of our spring vacation. We had stayed at Wahweap last night so we could take the tour of Glen Canyon Dam at 8:00 am. Visiting the dam is something I have always wanted to do. Glen Canyon Dam represents one of the marvels of human engineering. While I might with the river was still allowed to run wild and free, the dam is still an amazing feet of engineering. To visit the dam we started by going through a security check with metal detectors. We gathered at the visitor desk with a number of others that were there for the tour. We left the visitor center descending in an elevator to the level of the dam top. The dam supports a 2 lane road along the top that has been used for traffic while bridge repair were being performed. We spent some time observing both the river and lake sides of the dam then proceeded to an elevator that descended to the generator level at the base of the dam. There is a large area between the dam and the generation facility that is a watered and mowed lawn. I guess there is no [...]

On Friday we awoke up to a beautiful day. We stayed in our sleeping bags waiting for it to warm up from a cold night. We had an easy breakfast and go started on breaking camp. Once packed and loaded we drove south to a place called red pocket. I saw this landmark on the map and thought it would be worth checking out. We found Red Pocket which is a small red sandstone area of sandstone mounds. It also seemed to have an active spring. There was a ton of pottery shards littering the ground leading us to wonder if the sandy mounds that seemed to circle the spring on one side had been surface dwellings. We then drove west winding our way across the plateau to house rock valley. Our last bit of off road driving for the trip. Once on the main dirt/gravel road in House Rock Valley we headed south towards Highway 89. Our main objective for the day was to see the condors at Vermilion Cliffs. I was not sure where to stop but we found a pull out that was for the condors. While viewing the condors flying above the cliffs LJ spotted a truck [...]

We had a windy night camping on the Paria Plateau. It was still very wind this morning. I was able to get breakfast cooked and we ate in the tent. At about 10:30 we got underway on our drive back to Paw Hole for our planned hike. Once at Paw Hole we headed north into the formations. With the cold winds LJ and Nancy were ready to get back to the car. The winds were gusting well above 25 mph. We spent about 45 minutes then it was back to the car. The sandstone tepee formation are all over the place. LJ things they look like something left behind by cows. I then drove us towards Cottonwood Cove but the road was blocked with some logs. I figure the park service had blocked the road to keep people out of an area that looked to have some very deep sand. I don’t think we would have had a problem but I chose not to extend tracks into an area where others might get stuck. Leaving LJ and Nancy in the car I hiked over to where the Chess Queen is located and took a few pictures. It was then back to camp for [...]

Our start for day 6 was leisurely. It was a cold night and we did not want to get out of our sleeping bags until the sun was close. The goal for the day was to see Grosvenor arch and hike the Cottonwood narrows. I wanted to be on Paria Plateau to setup our camp. Grosvenor is a double arch in yellow sandstone. The color was unique to us. Most arches we have seen in the Moab area are in red sandstone. We spent about ½ hour enjoying the arch before heading back down Cottonwood Canyon to hike the Narrows. Cottonwood narrows is a loop that uses the road as the return route. We chose to hike from the bottom parking area. At the start of the canyon we came across a major new rock fall from this last winter. The next time the wash runs it is going to create a large dam. The rest of the hike is along a flat canyon and is very suitable for children. Today it was cool in the shade with a wind blowing up the canyon. At one bend the rock rises high above with large overhang that the wash has cut [...]

While planning our 2009 spring trip adventure I planned on taking Left Hand Colet from Hole-in-the-rock Road to Smoky Mountain Road. When we stopped for a snack in Boulder, Utah, the owner told me that Left Hand Colet was closed due to a wash out from 2 years ago. Bummer, I thought, it’s time to change our plans. On the day were where to drive Left Hand Colet we stopped to look at the dinosaur tracks then decided to go as far as we could on Left Hand Colet. When we hit the first wash crossing I could tell that a loader had been through before us. This was a good sign. I hoped this indicated the trail had been repaired all the way to the top. Many times we were driving in the wash and could see that it would not be the place to be during a rain storm. As we continued up the track the repairs became rougher and the wash outs larger. However, things did look promising with the loader tracks continuing and the trail repairs in place. I Figured some rancher had fixed the road up to the first major side canyon so he could [...]
