I completed the install of my new Icom IC-7000 in our Toyota FJ Cruiser today. With the wiring completed all I had to finish was the mounting of the radio, MODEM, antenna controller and the radio head. I mounted the radio and MODEM on the installed mounting platform. The antenna controller is mounted to the MODEM using double sided tape. The wiring was then completed to the radio hardware. The CAT cable and MODEM USB cables are run under the trim right behind the rear seats. The radio head is mounted under the carPC display using a modified mobile phone mount. The mount allows for some adjustment of the head. The radio and MODEM are cabled to the computer so I can run AIRMAIL for sending and receiving emails using the WINLINK 2000 system. I also am able to run computer control software for the radio. The total time to complete the install was about 10 hours. Cost (This is the retail cost, I was able to purchase some of the equipment used): ICOM IC-7000 – $1195.00 SCS PTC-IIusb Modem with PACTOR-II License – $1248.00 Turbo-Tuner antenna controller – $199.00 Little Tarheel II screwdriver antenna – $379.00 Little Tarheel [...]

I started the install of my new HF Radio in the Toyota FJ Cruiser. The install includes the following items: Icom IC-7000 All Band Radio SCS PTC-IIusb Pactor-II HF Radio Modem Turbo-Tuner Screwdriver Antenna Controller RIGtalk USB Rig CV-I rig control interface Little Tarheel II Screwdriver Antenna Associated cables Icom remote speaker The install involves the following tasks: Install the remote speaker Install the remote control head for the radio Build the antenna mount support for the screwdriver antenna Install the antenna Route the Antenna feed-line and Screwdriver control line to the antenna mount location Install the radio mounting platform Run power cable from main battery Mount the radio, modem and antenna controller Cable the radio and modem to the on-board computer Make all radio and modem connections Today’s work involved getting the Speaker mounted, the radio platform installed and the antenna installed. The speaker is mounted to the top of the center cluster. With the cluster removed it is easy to run the cables down behind the FM radio and though the center console. The remote radio head will be mounted under my on-board computer display so this cable has also been routed with the speaker wire to the [...]

So I passed my General class Ham Radio license test a few weeks ago. The General license expands my privileges into the HF bands. When you hear about people talking to the other side of the world using their radio, it is on HF that they did it. I passed my General so I would have another method of communications when we are out on the road. Using my new general privileges I will be able to use a data mode called PACTOR to send and receive email. Email is accomplished using a system call Winlink 2000. In short Winlink is a system that was developed to allow ship to shore communications for armature radio operators. Currently there are over 41 active participating network stations world wide that an end user can connect to to send and receive email. Using this system requires an HF radio as well as a PACTOR controller. I currently am deciding on our mobile configuration that will be installed in the FJ. However, it will include an HF radio like the Icom IC-7000 or the Yaesu FT-857d, some sort of tunable antenna like a screw drive, and a SCS PTC-IIusb. The system will be interfaced with our on board computer system I [...]

With the roof rack installed on our Toyota FJ Cruiser it was time to get the Ham Radio antennas installed. Three antennas are needed for my build. The first antenna is used for the ARPS radio and the other two are used by the ICOM 2820. The 2820 uses the primary antenna for transmission. For reception two antennas are used with the antenna with the best signal selected. The mounts are made out of a heavy duty selection of aluminum “L” stock. The brackets are then bolted to the rack and the antenna mounts are then attached to the brackets. I use UFH based mounts which allows an me to attach a cable to the mount if I need to setup a high gain antenna for stationary communications. Cost: Antenna Mount and cable: $45.00 each Time: 1.5 hours

With the redo of DaToy’s electronics I decided to get away from the laptop and implement an integrated Car PC. The Computer is designed to have the following functionality: - Built in GPS using Garmin GPS 15 - Integration with the FJ Jammer using Car2PC - OBD II Support - Touch Screen Capability - Bluetooth Support - WiFi Capability Supported software: - Garmin nRoute and Mappoint with Topo map support - HAM Radio APRS using APRSpoint and AGWP - Weather Radar for Stop Spotting using Stormlab - I’m evaluating Car Computer front end software - Internet access via tethered Cell Phone or WiFi - Music library and Napster support with integration to the FJ Jammer With these goals I prototyped the system in my office: You can see the 160gb hard drive that I will be able to load with a large music library. I have been having problems with the mother board pictured here and will be replacing it with a more current board. The board is early XP and does not have the driver support that I need. With the system prototyped I was ready to put it together in a case. I decided to use an aluminum [...]

While the Bandi Mount offers a great location for a CB antenna, it is not optimal for a UHF/VHF Ham radio antenna. For my initial install I chose to install my antenna on the factory roof rack, centered at the rear. While this is not optima, it is much better than mounting on the rear door hinge. To built the mount I used a large piece of “L” shaped aluminum that I picked up at a local used parts house. I was able to cut the aluminum using my electric chop saw. By adding 2 u-bolts and SO239 mount I had a solid mount point for the antenna. I was running a LARGE antenna on this and had no problems.

Yaesu FT-8800r Install As a HAM my mobile radio installation was one of the first modifications that I completed. My section of a radio needed to meet the following requirements: Have Dual VFO capability for U/U V/U and V/V Provide cross band repeater function Have a detachable head. I have been using Yaeus radios for some time and like the menu structure and the solid construction. I picked that Yaesu FT8800 as my radio to install in the FJ Cruiser. Choosing a location for the radio took some work. The FJ Cruiser has some room behind the left rear trim panel. This is the location of the AC inverter.

I use a Laptop computer in my Toyota FJ Cruiser for a number of applications. I needed a solid off road mount which I found from RAM Mounts. RAM Mounts are designed for applications such as Police and Emergency vehicles. The mount connects to the front bolts of the passenger seat which provides a very solid base. The tower is very solid and can be moved up and down to position the laptop at the right height. I use a single arm which positions the laptop in just the right location. The laptop platform is fabricated from aluminum stock.
