For some time I have been planning on mounting water tanks under the bed of our M416 trailer. The idea was to be able to carry more water and to have the weight down low to help keep the trailer from tipping. I ordered two 15 gallon tanks off the Internet as a starting point for this project. Initially I was planning on fabricating my own mounting straps but in the end I decided to have Rockware fabricate tank saddles for me. Right choice!!! Using sheet aluminumRockware delivered to easy to mount light weight saddles. The tanks were a snap to get mounted. Once installed I moved onto plumbing the system. I choice to use a small electric RV pump mounted in a small water proof case on the fender. This is powered by an auxiliary battery mounted on the same side of the trailer. The battery is over sized for the pump but when the trailer is wired to the truck the battery will help with the accessory load in the truck when parked. I used reinforced vinyl tubing for the water pipes which I hope will hold up well on the under side of the trailer. Completed, the [...]

The standard pintle hitch on the M416 trail is a great hitch. However, there are a few shortcomings; the pintle is REALY noisy; in many cases the tongue is to short; for high speed highway travel it is lacking in stability; and it is really hard to back. The positive of the original pintal is that it is a multi axis hitch that will spin 360 deg. The ability of the hitch to spin is a key for off road trailer. If the trailer flips the last thing you want is it to torque the hitch and frame. To fix all these problems I purchased and had a welder install a MAX hitch on my M416. The installation requires a receiver tube to be installed in the trailer. For this installation I had a 12″ tongue extension built which allows me to run the trailer with the original tongue length or extended by 12″. The MAX hitch maintains the mutli axis qualities of the original pintle with the added benefits of a much quieter and lighter hitch. However, the hitch is a bit of a challenge to hook-up (more on this after I have used the hitch for some time). With the extension the trailer [...]

With the intention of moving my roof top tent rack outside the trailer bed some frame modifications were needed. The initial modifications where to the frame. I needed to extend the front and rear frame cross members about 10″ out from the side of the bed. The front and rear cross members where replaced. The center was extended with short sections of tubing These center sections are not structural. The extended frame was then boxed in with the same tubing. With the frame modified I was able to remount the tub to the trailer frame. I did need to notch the lower lip on the tub to accommodate the extended frame.

The rear spring shackles on the M416 are not very durable and they have a tendency to bend. There is any easy replacement that fixes this problem. I ordered replacement shackles for an early build jeep that add about 3/4″ lift as well as strengthen the build. The replacement was an easy 20 minute job.

Our M-416 Military trailer is a continued work in progress. The project yesterday was to add wheel spacers to the axle. With the 295/17-17 tires mounted on the trailer I was having a problem with the tires rubbing on the trailer tub. I chose to add All Pro Off Road Toyota wheel spacers to move the tires away from the tub and prevent the rub. The spacers add 1.5” to each side which widens the stance of the trailer to 67 ¾”. This will also help increase the stability of the trailer when off road. The installation took about 45 minutes. A side benefit is I can now install the center caps on the wheels and cover the hub grease caps.

I use my M416 exclusively as an off road adventure trailer. I have found the original springs to be a little stiff. To rectify this I ordered 8 leaf springs from JC Whitney and performed a quick swap. The springs are for the front of a CJ3 jeep. I also replace the shackle bolts at the same time. I used my tongue jack to lift the trailer wheels off the ground. The spring replacement took about 30 minutes per side.

For our adventure travels I run the same tires and rims on our M416 trailer as on the FJ. With the larger 295 tires additional fender clearance was needed as well as additional width. The M416 fenders have a lip that is about 1.25 inches that adds additional strength. By cutting this lip off I was able to gain the 1.25″ back in additional tire clearance. I then extended the fenders about 3.5 inches using urethane sheets riveted to the fenders. The urethane provides a flexible yet durable fender. I still my have to add wheel spaces but more on that later.

I finally received our new rooftop tent. The ARB tent was not large enough for 3 people so we are upgrading to a Ezi Awn T-Top 1800 RoofTop Tent. The 1800 is going to give us and additional 17 inches in width which will allow the 3 of us to have enough room to sleep. The tent was delivered on a large pallet with 2 additional boxes containing the ladder and the room. To be able to mount the tent I needed to add additional cross bars to the rack. Using the skid loader with the forks attached made it very easy to set the tent on the rack. The tent weighs about 200 lbs and would have been difficult to set by hand. Once bolted in place the tent is very securely mounted. I will be doing a full write up on the tent once I have had a chance to use it in the next few weeks. I also will be adding lift struts to the rack to make lifting the tent easier to lift. The tent is very high quality and utilises very durable canvas and hardware.

It took me some time to figure out where to carry my Scepter Fuel cans on my M416 trailer. We initially carried two fuel cans on top of the FJ. We then went on a trip where we needed to use the 2 cans and did not have a reserve. I always like to carry one backup can that I hope we do not need. Moving 2 cans to the trailer and keeping one on the FJ rack seems to be the right choice for us. If we setup the trailer as a base camp will will still have one can when we are off in the FJ. The scepter cans can be carried on their side which increases the options for carrying. A while ago I decided that the best place for the cans would be on their side in front of the fenders. I have been planning on this modification for some time and finally got around to it, went and got the steal, and using my somewhat rudimentary welding skills I fabricated two racks for the cans. The racks have lots of slop in them, however this is needed to the cans can still be removed when they [...]
