Sorry I have been negligent on getting the blog updated. It has been a busy spring with a trip to the Overland Expo and Cruise Moab as well as all the other stuff going on. I spent almost 2 weeks in Moab and it was a good test for the latest build. There will be some updates forthcoming on the problems and successes. I did have a few installed items fail which I will cover in detail. I should have time to get busy on the computer. I have to take some down time due to a few broken ribs due to a run in with a car on my MTB. More later….

Being somewhat of a gadget freak, electronic mapping fits right in. With the on-board computer in our Toyota FJ Cruiser build, the GPS and mapping capability is built in. I have a number of applications that I run on the PC for real time use; Garmin Routing Software, National Geo TOPO! maps, APRS (Ham Radio Location application), ARRL Repeater Location software. All these applications work well for their specific requirement and I run them only when needed. To feed these applications the live GPS data stream I use an application called GPSgate. GPSgate is a mux for the GPS data, it reads the input stream from the GPS and creates as many real time output streams as needed in either Garmin or native NMEA format . For recording our trips I utilize the data logging feature of GPSgate. Once the computer is started GPSgate opens a log file and records the raw data stream. It is this log file that is then used to create the online maps that I include in the trip blog posts. The first step is to copy the log files onto my home computer which is done using a thumb drive or by connecting to [...]

This December ARB will be offering additional sizes of its well respected Fridge Freezer. The sizes will be from 37qt to 82qt. I may have to get a 37qt to run as a freezer in the trailer. I have been running the 50qt since it was released and it has performed very well in all conditions. (ARB Press Release)

We have finally surpassed the 200 followers mark on facebook. It is nice to have a group of people who are interested in the work that I am doing building our new FJ and the adventures we will take it on. Photos, writing and posting all this information takes a good chunk of time but I do enjoy sharing with you all. After being told I could not post links to my blog and then being banned for trying to discuss the issue with a moderator I will not be posting much anymore on the fjcruiserforums site. If you know fellow FJ owners over there that might be interested in what I am doing please invite them to follow us on facebook as well. The “Blue Forum” is a commercially owned site and their #1 goal is to make money. If ones actions are contrary to that it will not be allowed. This is sort of an interesting twist to the once open Internet and WEB philosophy. Happy trails and posting to all.

Toyota has issued a press release announcing the 2011 FJ Cruiser line up. It is nice to see the line continued with some improvements. The main changes look to be in the electronics with an improved stereo with additional phone and bluetooth controls. The Trail Team special edition will be a solid Army Green with Green trim on the seats. Should be a good looking FJ. Press Release.

So, the insurance company has chosen to total our Blue FJ Cruiser. I spent this last Tuesday in Montrose pulling all the modifications off that I could. I started at about 7:30 and finished at around 3:00 in the afternoon. 100 of hours of work torn out of the FJ in under 8 hours. I spend most of the time pulling electrical and electronic mods. I had to leave the suspension and drive train mods in place. The FJ was totaled due to both the body damage and damage to the engine. I’ll be writing more later about what transpired to cause the roll and engine damage. Our blue FJ cruiser was a great vehicle and took us on countless miles of adventures aver the last 4 years. We have many fond memories of places near the middle of nowhere. Time to start a new adventure with a new FJ, the White Knight.

Once I have additional details I will post about what happened and the insurance claim process. This happened the day before the summit started so I was unable to participate in any of the organized activities. Thanks for all the kind and encouraging words.
