I had always heard stories that a trip on the Alcan would cost a windscreen. I made it through 7000 miles of our Alaskan trip with not a single chip. I made it through the Dempster and the Dalton with no problems. It was on the return trip on the Alcan that my luck finally ran out. With a semi coming the other direction I got a rock in the windscreen that send shock waves through the cab. Thankfully it was in front of the passenger seat and not the driver so I was able to continue home. A few weeks ago I finally got around to making a call to Safelite Auto Glass and called them out for a replacement. With farmers insurance the replacement cost was only $100.00.

As part of my re-gear and tire size upgrade I wanted to improve brake performance on My Toyota FJ Cruiser. To this end I chose to upgrade the rotors and pads on the FJ to slotted rotors and better pads. I chose to go with cryogenically treated slotted rotors from Frozen Rotors combined with Hawk Performance pads. Cryogenically treated rotors have been shown to have more resistance to warping and cracking, an increases rotor and pad life, as wells as reduced brake fade The “freezing” of the rotors changes the crystal structure of the metal. The rotors are not cheap but the extended life and improvement in brake performance should justify the cost. The installation of the front rotors and pads is an easy process. With the rear tires chalked I lifted the front of the FJ with my floor jack and placed jack stand under the a-arms to keep the FJ from falling if the jack failed. First the front wheels need to be removed to expose the calipers and rotors. The calipers must be spread to allow the new pads to be fitted. I did this with channel locks and some screw drivers. I was not concerned about damage [...]

This Sunday is maintenance day for my Toyota FJ Cruiser. The projects include replacing the joints in the upper a-arms and upgrading and brake pads and rotors. First on the agenda was to tackle the a-arms The joints in the All Pro Off Road upper a-arms are lined with Teflon and wear out after 15,000 to 20,000 miles. My Toyota FJ Cruiser has about 50,000 miles so it was time for the second set of joints to be replaced. All Pro sent me a new set of joints and I attempted this maintenance operation a few weeks ago. When I attempted to remove the bolt I found that it had been bent due to a hard impact we experienced on our last trip that bottomed out the suspension. At full compression the bolt bound up in the joint housing and the bolt bent as well as the miss alignment bushings. Unable to remove the bolts I put the front of the FJ back together and called All Pro for replacement bolts and bushings. I received new bolts and bushings from All Pro on Friday and was ready to do the repair this weekend. I tried to tap the joints out [...]

I just got My Toyota FJ Cruiser back from the shop for some warranty work. There were 2 specific issues that I took the FJ in for; the first was idler pulley noise, and the second was an issue with VCS kicking in while driving a straight line. The idler pulley problem is a common issue. The Toyota pulleys do not use good sealed bearing and when using the FJ for adventure travel moisture can get in the pulley and cause the pulley to fail. I was able to get this fixed as a warranty repair. I also have ordered some quality sealed bearing pulleys for future installation. The Second issue was much more serious. On Monday I was driving the FJ at about 35 MPH when the skid control indicator came on and the system applied the right front brake aggressively thinking it was correcting a skid. This caused me to veer to the right. Had I been driving a highway speed and this happened I suspect I would have crashed the FJ. According to the dealer this was caused by excessive front wheel bearing wear. There was excessive movement in the front hub which caused the system to [...]

With many replacement upper A-Arms the joints are advanced racing type hardware and are good for about 15,000 miles. On my FJ Cruiser the joints had worn and the Teflon material had actually started to come out of the joint. I discussed this issue with All Pro and they sent out replacement joints. I have had good experience with All Pro Off Roads customer service. The replacement of these joints took me about 1 hour and only a few tools. A pair of cir-clip pliers will be needed. I used a 36 mm socket to drive the old joint out and the new one in. Here are the steps that I followed to make this repair. 1 – I jacked and supported the front of the FJ. Be sure to chock the rear tires. 2 – I then removed the front wheel and support the bottom A-Arm with another jack. 3 – I fully inspected the current joint and A-Arm for damage. 4 – I then remove the nut from the bottom of the bolt. 5 – I remove the top of the spindle from the A-Arm and then used a block of wood to drive the bolt out of the [...]

Well, my FJ Cruiser is still in the shop. This is the start of week two. It was hauled by tow truck up the body shop this morning. The body shop is expecting to have the FJ for more than a week to complete the replacement of the fender aprons. I will be checking with them and taking pictures. I will post the progress here. The FJ had to be towed because the transmission is still out. When they went to replace the bell housing they found another part that needs to be replaced. This part is on back order until December 22nd. I have hopes that I will have my healed FJ back by Christmas. Toyota of Colorado Springs in has been great about getting these repairs made. They don’t have much control over the parts back order.

I got a call from the dealer today about my throw out bearing noise. It sounds like Toyota they had a batch of bell housing where the sleeve that the t-o bearing runs on was milled a little off. The aluminum sleeve is shown in the photo and you can see how it has been damaged. The bearing chatters on the sleeve which is what causes the noise. A new bell housing is on order and it should be a permanent fix to the problem

DaToy goes into the shop next Monday to get the fenders replaced due to structural cracks. This problem has show up in many FJ Cruiser through what appears to be mid year 2008. Toyota has re-engineered the fenders and I will try to get into the body shop and get pictures as the fix is being implemented. I will be removing all of my Accessory power systems and redoing this installation when I get the FJ back. I used the fenders as mount points for lots of the under the hood electrical mods so I need to remove them prior to the FJ going into the shop. I also will be getting some other warranty work performed which I will detail later.
