Our way north was continued from Prince Rupert to Juneau on the Alaska Marine Highway. We spent the night prior to boarding in a Prince Rupert Hotel near the ferry terminal to make the morning start of 3:30 am a little easier. We were one of the first in line to board the ferry and Dale took the chance to make coffee under the cover of the Customs area. Once customs opened we made our way to line up in the boarding queue. Once boarded we found our berths to settle in for the 30 hour trip to Juneau. The ferry follows the inside passage with stops at a number of small towns. We took advantage of the time on the ferry to relax knowing that we were nearing the driving portion of the trip. The food on-board the ferry was nothing spectacular so we took advantage of the stops in a number of small towns along the way to disembark and purchase food. The view from the ferry deck was spectacular with the sunset being especially colorful. We passed a number of cruse ships that were also following the inside passage. With darkness falling the ferry turned into the Wrangell [...]

We left the north end of Vancouver Island via the BC ferry Northern Expedition. The ferry took us on an 18 hour tour of the inside passage from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert. To meet the height restriction fro the ferry I had removed my rooftop box and all the antennas. Once on board and parked we headed up to the forward viewing deck. By paying a few extra dollars we had seats with a great forward view. With an 18 hour trip ahead of us we were going to enjoy these seats. For this section of the trip I will let the photos speak for themselves. Bald Eagle in Flight Additional Photos

Last weekend I spent an day with the TLCA chapter Colorado Land Cruisers. Every Christmas holiday this club volunteers with the forest service to help patrol and recover stuck vehicles in the Pike National Forest during the Christmas tree cutting season. It was a cold morning with highs expected to be in the low teens and new snow on the ground. We all gathered a temporary the Forest Service office near Woodland Park. After a short briefing from the FS we broke up into groups of 4 and headed off to look for stranded tree cutters. We stopped a few miles up the road and installed chains. Chains were going to be needed on the north end of the area that we were covering and also needed for recovery activities. Once chained we headed north on Rampart Range Road and once to our section we started driving the side roads looking for stuck vehicles. With no action by noon we found a nice side road and pulled out for a lunch break. After lunch we headed to the end of the road (closed gate) to check out road 327. We had some fun in the deep snow, over 2 feet, [...]

We again woke to beautiful sky’s with temperatures in the mid 20s. Bundled up we had a breakfast of HOT tea and oatmeal. The sunrise was as spectacular as any I have seen in Utah with colors from deep reds to bright pinks. We had no morning fire so we would not have to deal with using water to be sure it was out, however we had our breakfast near the fire ring imagining the heat from last night warming our cold bodies. Once on the road we made a run for the trail head of Crack Canyon for a short day hike. Crack Canyon offers an one of the easier hikes with no rope work needed and a little rock scrambling. We headed down the canyon with our to dogs Triss and Jett leading the way. Soon the walls of the canyon closed in and we were experiencing the thrill of being in a slot canyon. At one section in the canyon the walls are riddled with really cool holes both small and large. Reaching the bottom of the canyon we turned around and returned the to the FJ at the top of the canyon. Time for some more [...]

Holed up in our warm sleeping bags it was hard to get started on our second day in the swell. We had set camp so we would get the early sun which help warm the tent and roust us from our cozy nest. With LJ getting a small morning fire started I fried up the left over baked potatoes, added some bacon and scrambled eggs for a good hearty breakfast. With camp finally broken we headed out for our drive down Eagle Canyon and out through the swell to Hidden Splendor Mine. The drive into Eagle Canyon drops down through the yellow sandstone walls to the wash bottom. Following the canyon bottom we enjoyed the sectacular spires and cliffs rising on both sides of us. At a fork in the road we head up the south fork of Eagle Canyon and soon we ascend to a high pass where we catch a look back down the canyon. From here we took a winding route over to the Muddy River and Tomsich Butte. The route passes many old uranium mines which have old structures and junk laying around. There are also a few old vehicles from the mining era. Leaving the Muddy [...]

Thanks to mother nature we had a snowy trip to get our Christmas tree this year. We have made cutting our Christmas tree in Pike National Forest and annual event. Our Toyota FJ Cruiser has just made this more fun. With the FJ chained up with Rud Grip 4×4 chains we were able to head to road 351 for a fun adventure. Even though we don’t have any snow on the ground in Colorado Springs, we found over two feet in this area of Rampart Range. Both LJ and the dogs had a great time playing in the snow. With the snow over the top of its head our new puppy Jett had a great time and turned into a little snow ball. With our tree cut and loaded it was time to sit back and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate. Once soon it was time to head back up the road and back home to the springs for some tree trimming Cheer. More photos can be viewed here

After switching, this fall, from a small private school to a larger public school for 9th grade my daughter stated that she needed some time in Utah to commune with nature. To fill this need we planned a short trip over Thanksgiving break to the San Rafael Swell. The plan was to drive to the Swell and and spend 3 days wheeling camping and hiking. We started the drip with a mid day run from Colorado Springs to where I70 and the Reef intersect. We left I70 and drove south on Utah 24 till we found a cut off and drove towards the base to the reef. It was dark so we did not know what to expect in the morning but I know the view should be spectacular. We rose with the sun which revealed the reef in all its glory. We found our selves camped about 1/2 mile east of the reef. I was able to get a short morning hike in with the dogs into a cool little canyon. After breakfast it was time to start our trek through the reef via Black Dragon Canyon. We crossed I70 via gates in the fence and a highway turnaround. No interchange [...]

As part of the 2011 Cruise Moab there we two overnight runs. One along the Kokopelli and the second to the San Rafael Swell. When I registered for CM 2011 I was placed on the waiting list for the Swell overnight run. Two days before the start of the event I received a call that a spot had opened up on the run. The Swell overnight is sponsored by Wasatch Cruisers and they put on quite an event. I arrived Tuesday evening and located the camp nestled in the beautiful golden sandstone. I was welcomed by a number of hosts. On Wednesday morning we were lead out on a great run through Eagle Canyon with a number of stop at old mine sites. This a cool area with a mix of cool canyons, formation and historic sites. The Wasatch Cruisers hosted us with home brewed beer and a great meal of pulled pork. What a wonderful evening with like minded folks. Black Dragon

Leaving Campbell River we headed into the norther reaches of Vancouver Island. Here the highway left the coast and took us through timber cutting country. Our first stop was at a small rustic restaurant over looking a picturesque lake. The stop was well worth the wonderful cinnamon roles that we found inside. We made a few side trips to view some of the log sorting yards. These yards take in the timber that has been cut, then sort it and drop it into the water to be transported to mills. The rest of the day was a uneventful with us reaching our destination, Port Hardy, late afternoon. It was early to bed so as to be ready to be at the ferry terminal at the break of dawn for our departure north. Additional Photos
