Geronimo Trail from Animas NM to Douglas AZ

On our drive to the Mexico border in Douglas Arizona, LJ and I decided to take a back route from Deming, New Mexico, to Douglas.  We headed south from Rock Hound State Park on Highway 11 towards Columbus, NM. In Columbus we stopped at Pancho Villa State Park. The visitor center was closed so we went for a short walk around the park. The park documents the attack of Pancho Villa on Columbus, NM.

Warning to travelers

Leaving Columbus we headed west on Highway 9. This highway parallels the Mexico border and we passed a border patrol about every 4 miles. The drive to Animas took us through the mountains of south western New Mexico.

Lunch Stop

We headed south from Animas on Highway 338. After about 20 miles the road turns to dirt. In wet condition the road really does become impassable even with 4wd. About 30 miles south of Animas we took a right on CR-C004. This route becomes Geronimo Trail and winds though the Coronado Nation Forest.

Looking towards Douglas, AZ

The route has numerous spots to stop and picnic or camp. The stream had a number of clear pools and the trees were starting to leaf out.  We really enjoyed the scenic vistas of this route and would recommend it to anyone.

Tomas has lived in Colorado since age 5. Having grown up on the Western Slope of Colorado lots of time was spent in the Desert Southwest. Tomas' father introduced him to the love of 4 wheeling at an early age in the high mountains around Aspen, Colorado. While an avid Mountain Biker, Tomas and his Family enjoy adventures in the mountains and desert in the remote locations that can only be reached by 4wd. Day hikes are always a must when on the family trips. While enjoying outdoor activities he wants to share his love as a certified 4wd trainer and ski instructor. Tomas also enjoys caving and cave exploration. Tomas currently resides in Colorado Springs.
