FJ Cruiser Grill Blackout

So the modifications have begun on our new Toyota FJ Cruiser. I have started with cosmetic changes and I am working on blacking out the silver on the grill, mirrors and door handles. The grill was first.

It was easy to remove the grill from the FJ with the removal of a couple of retaining clips and 2 bolts. With the grill out of the FJ I then took the grill out of the silver frame.

Primed Grill Frame

I used a sanding block  on the silver frame to provide better paint adhesion. Once sanded and cleaned I used plastic bonding agent, some primer then a few coats of Rustolium Black Textured paint. The textured paint has the same look and feel of the black plastic trim.

I am very pleased with the finished look of the grill and can’t wait to get the other silver blacked out. The Iceberg FJ should never have been made with silver trim!!!

You Know you can buy all those trim pieces already in black, from the dealer, for just hundreds and hundreds of dollars. LOL!

I have a 2007 Titanium Silver FJ that I will begin hitting with the same blackout pieces as you are. Until I replace my stock bumper with a winch type (not sure which model yet), I will also be painting black the lower bumper section and the silver portions of the rear bumper. I look forward to seeing your future projects.

LOVE IT!! I will follow your exact steps on mine ..but be truthful how difficult was it, really, to take the grill out and put back in without incurring any problems? Can a hack like me do it without tearing out my hair?

Probably not. Best to pull your hair out and trade your truck in for a mini cooper or a new green electric car.
