White Rim Trail Thanksgiving Adventure – Day 2

Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4

Our second day on White Rim took us from Labyrinth Camp to The Murphy Hogback with a detour to Zeus and Moses.

Zeus and Moses

With the cold morning we got started after the sun finally hit our camp. I was a windy night and the rooftop tent was rock’n and roll’n.  Starting the day with a hot drink and a hot breakfast is a must on these winter outings and today was a morning for Pancakes and Hot Chocolate.

With breakfast done and the packing done we headed up a side spur to Zeus and Moses for a hike.  From White Rim to the Zeus and Moses trail head took less than an hour. With sun warming us for the hike we spent a few hours hiking the loop trail around the towers.

Leaving Zeus and Moses the trail took us to Hardscrabble Hill. This section got us above the green river across a very exposed section of road. This section provides access to the Fort Bottom Ruin trail head. After Potato Bottom the trail finally encounters the White Sandstone Rim it is named after.

We stopped and checked out a small slot canyon that drops through the white sandstone to the green river.  There were a few pools that we need to step over to keep our feet dry.

Driving the white sandstone rim is very spectacular on this section of trail. There are a number of places where the trail runs only a few feet from the edge of the rim.

We made Murphy Hogback in the late afternoon and were able to enjoy the late afternoon sun as we setup camp. After an early dinner it was off to bed.
