Alaska – Vancouver Island South

We accessed Vancouver Island via the Anacortes to Sidney ferry. The ferry takes a few hours and is a very senic ride through San Juan Islands. There are a number of departure times from Anacortes that will suite most travelers itineraries.

Once on the island we headed south to find our camp site near Victoria at Goldstream Provincial Park. I was very impress by the size and beauty of the trees as well as how clean the park was.

We started the next day at a leisurely pace and headed north through the rolling farm lands of southern Vancouver Island. The road then took us toward the east side of the island and through a number of small fishing villages. The heritage of the fisheries was apparent as we drove through, however, there where way to many tourists for my liking.

We took a mid afternoon stop in Duncan, also known as The City of Totems. There are totem poles all over town. These are impressive carvings representing the native cultures.

Heading north from Duncan we found our next camp inland a few miles from the town of Campbell River at the Parkside Campground.
