Thankginving in the Swell – Day 2

Holed up in our warm sleeping bags it was hard to get started on our second day in the swell. We had set camp so we would get the early sun which help warm the tent and roust us from our cozy nest.

Morning in Camp

With LJ getting a small morning fire started I fried up the left over baked potatoes, added some bacon and scrambled eggs for a good hearty breakfast. With camp finally broken we headed out for our drive down Eagle Canyon and out through the swell to Hidden Splendor Mine.

Reaching the bottom of Eagle Canyon

The drive into Eagle Canyon drops down through the yellow sandstone walls to the wash bottom. Following the canyon bottom we enjoyed the sectacular spires and cliffs rising on both sides of us. At a fork in the road we head up the south fork of Eagle Canyon and soon we ascend to a high pass where we catch a look back down the canyon.

From here we took a winding route over to the Muddy River and Tomsich Butte. The route passes many old uranium mines which have old structures and junk laying around. There are also a few old vehicles from the mining era.

LJ taking a drive

Leaving the Muddy River we climb back to the top of the Swell and head for Hidden Splendor Mine. The drive took us through some spectacular scenery with great views of the area behind the Reef.

LJ Getting the fire ready

We ended the day finding a camping site with a fantastic 360 degree view.
